How Fire Changed Downtown Saratoga Springs
Great fires in Saratoga Springs have destroyed property, taken lives and created gaping holes in the cityscape. Entire blocks were lost due to massive and uncontrollable conflagrations. This exhibit focuses on four areas of the city and some of the most its most infamous fires. It analyzes the impact they had on the city and its people. A self-guided, 10 mile Battlefield Tour Road is open to cyclists from April 1st until mid-November. It has a multi-use lane for bicycle and pedestrian use. There are 10 wayside exhibit stops along the tour road. Take advantage of the fantastic Cell Phone Tour feature. CONGRESS PARK CAROUSEL
Opening Mother’s Day – May 9th
The Congress Park Carousel was carved by Marcus Illions in 1910. It is the only two-row Illions carousel that remains intact. It has 28 horses with real horsehair tails. In 1987, when the Kaydeross Park amusement park closed, local citizens raised $120,000 to save the carousel. It was restored by the Saratoga Springs Public Works Department and reopened in 2002 in a new building designed by Saratoga architect John Muse. Springtime hours: Open weekends until the end of June.
